Father John Burkhart was ordained in 1960 in Ohio. He has served St. John's  since 1995, first as part-time clergy, becoming full time in 1997. In February 1998, Fr. Burkhart was installed as the first Rector of St. John's, following acceptance of the church into parish status after 98 years as a mission.

Fr. Burkhart has served several churches in the Diocese of Lexington (Kentucky) during his career, including churches in Richmond, Middlesboro, Hazard, Somerset, Ashland, Georgetown, Beattyville, and Prestonsburg.

He holds a doctorate in Psychology with an emphasis on Marital and Family Counseling. He taught for 33 years, the last 20 at Eastern Kentucky University. He is now retired from teaching.

His wife, Milly, is also a retired educator. She was an instructor in Communications at Eastern Kentucky University. She still teaches part time at Somerset Community College extended campuses in London and Mt. Vernon.

The youngest of Burkhart's four children, Sarah, graduated from high school in the Spring of 2009.
